About Johanna Arnesson

Employed as a PhD student at JMG since September 2013. Previous studies in Media and Communication at Stockholm University (JMK), as well as gender studies at Södertörn University. Has also worked in the nonprofit sector for many years.

Research Areas

I am primarily interested in issues at the intersection of cultural studies, political communication, critical marketing, PR and consumer research, as well as consumer cultures.

Current Research Project

The overall theme of my PhD thesis is the convergence of politics and consumption in contemporary discussions on sustainability, gender equality and global justice. Drawing on a discourse-historical approach, the study specifically aims at exploring how the idea of 'ethical' or 'sustainable' consumption is constructed in contemporary discourses about fashion and clothing consumption, and how Swedish fashion retail companies use ethical and/or political issues in their marketing and branding communication. The discourses are found in three different areas: journalism, corporate communication, and social media.

Teaching

Currently teaching on basic and intermediate level in Media and Communication Studies, within the modules Introduction to Media and Communication Studies, and Perspectives on media and communications. Also supervising graduate theses at the Bachelor level.
