About Alla Rybina

Research interest

In my PhD project I am exploring the concept of Data Journalism. Questions that drive my research include ideas of journalistic professionalism and identity, the future of journalism, journalistic culture, the new practices and dynamics of journalism production. The overall goal of my project is to explore the potential of data journalism in contributing to a democratic development.

Academic background

My academic background is in journalism and media studies, in which I have both bachelor's and master's degrees. In addition to Russian, which is my mother tongue, I am proficient in English and Swedish.

In 2011, I graduated from the Faculty of Journalism at Lomonosov Moscow State University, where I spent six years studying literature, history, language and philosophy. While being a student at Moscow State University, I took part in two exchange programmes - at Windesheim University of Applied Sciences in Zwolle (the Netherlands) and at Linnaeus University in Kalmar (Sweden). In a search for more international perspective on journalism, I joined a two-year (120 ECTS) ‘Global Journalism’ master programme at Örebro University, Sweden. The programme included courses on War and Peace Journalism at Oslo and Akershus University College and Climate Change reporting at the University of Tampere.

In 2013, I attended a six-week International Summer School (ISS) at the University of Oslo, taking a master course in media studies (15 ECTS).

I participated in ECREA Summer School for PhD students in Milan during July-August 2017.

Professional background

During my student years, I was freelancing as a journalist, worked at the Media Center of Moscow State University. For several years, I worked as a reporter of the Oil&Gas department at Interfax news agency in Moscow, Russia. After moving to Sweden, I was a blogger for Örebro University. After graduating from Örebro University, I got an internship and a part-time contract at Swedish Public Radio - Sveriges Radio.

In addition, I try to develop various skills and broaden my expertise. In November 2014, I took part in Media Innovation Hackathon by Al Jazeera in Doha (Qatar). In September 2016, I participated in a coding camp ‘Tjejer Kodar’ (in Swedish ‘Girls Code’) where I learnt basics in Arduino, Electronics and C language.

Teaching

I am involved in teaching on the Master's programme in Investigative Journalism. I am part of the team teaching on the course JU2602 'Data journalism and visualization' (15 ECTS), where I have given lectures (in English) on such topics as Data Journalism research and Open Data.
