About Annika Bergström

I took my PhD in Journalism, Media and Communication in 2005. The thesis focused on news consumption practices in the Swedish population between 1998 and 2003.

Since 2005, I’ve been working as a researcher and lecturer at JMG, and also as a research administrator and deputy head at the SOM Institute.

My research has mainly focused on the use of digital media, user participation in journalism and in politics and the transformation from analogue to digital media from a user perspective.

Research Areas

My main research interest is in audience research. Media use, and particularly use of news media in a longitudinal perspective is the core of my research projects. Related to use, I’m also interested in how media habits change when new media, new platforms and new actors enter the news media landscape. Associated with news in digital media, is also user participation, and I have studied use of commentary fields and news use in social media over the years.

Current Research Project

I am currently involved in a large research programme at GU – AgeCap – where I study digital divides in the older population. Within the programme, I’m also involved in studies about the correlation between use of digital applications and well-being.

I also study news audiences continuously, and have recently published articles on news use in social media, and the digital transformation with regard to use of local news.

Completed Research Project

I previously worked in a four-year research project about e-books in a small language market. The project included all actors surrounding the e-book and together with research colleagues I studied authors, publishers, libraries, bookstores, aggregators and readers to deepen the understanding of the e-book in relation to other formats such as the printed book and audio books. The project is presented here: https://jmg.gu.se/english/research/research-projects/Completed+projects/the-case-of-the-e-book-in-a--small-language--culture.

Teaching

I only do a small amount of teaching. Mainly, I teach on undergraduate level and about media use. I also teach survey method to doctoral students.
