Personification of politics

Johannes Bjerling’s doctoral thesis concerns the media coverage of Swedish elections to parliament. One of the main questions addressed is whether the media focus on party leaders has increased over time. The question is posed against the background of changes observed in media and in the political system, and further relates to the role and representation of the political parties. Have we left the traditional party democracy behind? Is today’s democracy rather an audience democracy? And if so, what has been the importance of media?

The analysis includes all elections to parliament since 1979 and the empirical material comprises news in the press and on radio and TV. The thesis is scheduled to be completed in 2012.
