Journalism in transition

The media industry and the nature of journalism are in a process of considerable change. In most cases, we are witnessing increasing levels of commersialisation, standardisation and competition, and the overall numbers of female journalists and formally trained journalists have increased dramatically in the last few decades.

Jenny Wiik’s doctoral thesis Journalism in Transition focuses on how these changes have affected the professional identity of Swedish journalists. What role in society do they believe they should have? How have their opinions in this respect changed over time?

This quantitative study is based on the survey Den Swedish Journalistkåren, which has been conducted five times from 1989 to 2005. The survey is a joint initiative between JMG and the Swedish Union of Journalists (SJF) and is sent out to a large sample of SJF members. The questions concern both the journalists’ backgrounds and their opinions on various issues, providing a good opportunity to analyse journalists as a professional group.

Jenny Wiik obtained her doctoral degree in March 2010.
