Labor and Liability - discourses of dynamism and despair during industrial crisis

Doctoral project

The thesis aims at examining changes concerning the labor market and is a critical discourse analysis on the news coverage of four different industrial crises in Sweden between 1960 and 2010, in order to examine in what way journalism constructs and negotiates questions of responsibility, guilt and solutions in conjuction with these crises.

Drawing on critical theory the study sets out to examine different aspects of individualization, class and power. One of the main questions focuses on the discourses of the individual's responsibility in relation to society's responsibility and in what way this becomes visible during the different crises. What part do the different actors have; the union, employees, employers, politicians and other authorities?

The claim which underpins this study is that societal transformations; economic and political, includes substantive elements of ideological change with a discursive character, which can be traced in news material.
