The newspapers' format change
and its consequences

In November 2000 when the Swedish newspaper Svenska Dagbladet adopted a tabloid format, it was the start of a massive transfer to a new national standard that occurred over the next few years. This process of change inspired the formation of Formatprojektet in 2004. The project was designed as a doctoral project by the former doctoral student Josefine Sternvik and her supervisors Ingela Wadbring and Lennart Weibull. In 2007 the research was presented in a doctoral thesis (in Swedish with an abstract in English) titled I krympt kostym. Morgontidningarnas formatförändring och dess konsekvenser (In shrunken suit. The Newspapers’ Format Change and its Consequences).

The format transition is discussed descriptively – what was it like and how was it done – but also from a consequence perspective with a focus on how the format development has affected the newspaper producers, the product itself and the readers.
