The Practice of Newspaper Ownership

Jonas Ohlsson’s doctoral thesis concerns the power configurations in Swedish newspaper companies. A company board is appointed by the owners of the company, and it is through the board that the owners exercise their formal control over the company and its operations. This is the reason why the board of a newspaper company is of major importance in matters related to owner control, concentration of ownership, editorial integrity and (possibly) increased profit demands in the daily press. The study can be seen as an extension of the research project Ledarskap i framgångsrika tidningsföretag, which was completed in the spring of 2009.

Five Swedish newspapers are included in the study: Barometern (Kalmar), Borås Tidning, Nya Wermlands-Tidningen (Karlstad), Sundsvalls Tidning and Östra Småland (Kalmar). The selection of newspapers was made to enable analysis of the relevance of factors such as ownership form, level of ownership dispersion, market position and political tendencies for the role of the boards in the governance of Swedish newspaper companies. The development over time is considered as well; the period of analysis is 1955–2005. The study is based mainly on interviews and meeting minutes from board and shareholders’ meetings.
