The media and the murder of Anna Lindh

The murder of Anna Lindh in September 2003 and the search for the killer received enormous attention in Swedish media. The tragedy had all the traits required to make it a major news story: It was unexpected and concerned a brutal murder of a well known and very popular female Swedish leading politician.

The study shows how four newspapers and four broadcast media reported on the murder investigation and the main actors involved in the event from 10 to 27 September 2003. It addresses, for example, which aspects the media chose to focus on and how they portrayed the police, the prosecution authority and the group of suspects that emerged.
