Newspaper journalists and their audience

The project Newspaper journalists and their audience studies the use of readership studies among nine Swedish subscribed newspapers from an editorial board perspective and journalist perspective.

The study was conducted 2004–2005 and shows, for example, that the utilisation of readership studies has increased in the daily press, mainly as a result of increased competition. The study was based on interviews with editors-in-chief and so-called legally responsible publishers (which all Swedish newspapers are obliged to have). In addition, the journalists at the studied newspapers were asked about their experiences regarding how the use of readership studies affects the journalistic work. A majority of the journalists felt that readership studies are relatively important. However, most journalists indicated that the studies rarely affect their work.
