Newspapers and democracy

One of the tasks of the school system is to make students competent within the area of democracy. A Swedish study indicates that schools at the upper-secondary level have to some extent been unsuccessful in this respect, especially when it comes to the vocational programmes. Thus, the purpose of this project is to study this particular group: However, it is quite conceivable that this type of democracy training is feasible also with younger students, say 9-12 years old.

Against this background, two studies were conducted in the autumn of 2008 and spring of 2009 – one with children in grades 4–6 and the other at the upper-secondary level. They are both based on an experimental design, with a few treatment groups and a few control groups. Similar studies are conducted in Argentina during the same time period. The treatment groups receive democracy training by means of newspapers.

The study was funded by WAN and was carried out jointly with the educational initiative Tidningen i Skolan.
