ICT and Media literacy education in primary schools

Doctoral project

Barbro Oxstrand is working on a thesis focusing on Critical Media Literacy. The working title for now: Critical Media and - information literacy. Teachers' perceptions and understanding of the concepts of critical media literacy and ICT in school and their views on important media education and the school's democratic mission for active citizenship.

The study is based on UNESCO's statement that Media Literacy education is a part of citizenship and human rights education (UNESCO-Paris Agenda 2007).

This study examines teachers' perception and understanding of the concept of critical media literacy and the need for such teaching, such as how media education can support the Swedish schools' mission according to the Swedish curriculum on Media - and Information Literacy (MIL) , Active Citizenship and Democratic Values.

Barbro Oxstrand is half-time graduate student in the Graduate Center for Science Education and Teaching Research (CUL) at the University of Gothenburg and is a doctoral candidate at the Faculty of Social Sciences and based at the Department of Journalism, Media and Communication (JMG). Doctoral topic is Social Sciences with Educational Science perspective.
